Our provision

Nurture. Build Trust. Move Forward.

At North Challenge Learning, we provide personalised alternative provision for young people who need a different approach to education.

Our provision is deliberately small and flexible, allowing us to build strong relationships with each young person and create learning around their individual needs, strengths, interests and goals.

We believe that when a young person feels safe, understood and supported, they are better able to engage with learning and begin to move forward.

Individualised Learning

Every young person is different.

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

We take time to understand each young person’s starting point, previous experiences, strengths, interests and barriers to learning.

From there, we create an individual programme designed around their needs and agreed outcomes.

Our provision can include:

1:1 Education
Individual teaching tailored to the young person’s pace, needs and interests.

English & Maths
Supporting core literacy and numeracy skills and building confidence in learning.

Functional Skills
Support towards Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate, including preparation and targeted intervention.

Academic Support
Helping young people address gaps in learning and develop effective study skills.

Personal Development
Building confidence, communication, independence and practical skills.

Practical & Enrichment Activities
Using purposeful activities to develop engagement, confidence, teamwork and wider skills.

Re-engagement

Sometimes the first step isn’t catching up academically.

It’s getting a young person to want to learn again.

We use consistent routines, positive relationships and engaging learning to help young people:

  • Rebuild confidence
  • Develop positive routines
  • Improve attendance
  • Increase engagement
  • Develop communication skills
  • Recognise their strengths
  • Become more independent
  • Develop a positive attitude towards learning

We recognise that progress can begin with small steps.

Nurture & Personal Development

Relationships are at the heart of our approach.

We provide a supportive environment where young people can develop confidence and learn to recognise their own strengths.

Depending on the individual, this might include:

  • Goal setting
  • Communication activities
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Creative activities
  • Outdoor learning
  • Practical tasks
  • Life skills
  • Developing independence
  • Planning for the future

Activities are selected according to the young person’s needs, interests and agreed outcomes.

Practical & Enrichment Learning

Learning doesn’t always have to happen behind a desk.

Where appropriate, we use practical and enrichment activities to help young people develop skills through doing.

These experiences can support:

Confidence | Communication | Teamwork | Problem solving | Independence | Resilience

Activities are purposeful and linked to the young person’s wider development and progression.

Supporting Progression

Our aim is always to help young people move forward.

For some young people, that may mean returning to mainstream education.

For others, it could mean moving into college, training, qualifications or employment.

We work with the young person, their school and relevant professionals to identify realistic and meaningful next steps.

This could include:

  • Reintegration into school
  • Progression to college
  • Further education or training
  • Working towards qualifications
  • Developing independence
  • Preparing for employment

How We Work

1. Understand

We start by listening.

We gather information about the young person’s needs, strengths, interests, previous education and current circumstances.

2. Plan

We agree clear objectives and develop an individual programme around the young person.

3. Build Trust

We establish a consistent, supportive relationship and create an environment where the young person feels safe to engage.

4. Learn & Develop

We deliver personalised education and activities designed to build academic, personal and practical skills.

5. Review

We monitor attendance, engagement and progress and communicate regularly with the relevant people.

6. Move Forward

We work towards the young person’s next appropriate step, whether that’s reintegration, further education, training or another pathway.

Working With Schools & Professionals

We understand that alternative provision needs to form part of a wider plan.

We work in partnership with schools and relevant professionals to ensure that placements are purposeful and aligned with agreed outcomes.

Depending on the placement, this can include:

  • Initial planning discussions
  • Clear targets and outcomes
  • Attendance monitoring
  • Regular progress updates
  • Review meetings
  • Evidence of progress
  • Next-step planning

Our aim is to give schools confidence that each young person is receiving purposeful, personalised education and that their progress is being monitored.

Small by Design. Personal by Nature.

We intentionally keep our provision small.

This allows us to spend time getting to know each young person, adapt our approach and build the trusting relationships that sit at the heart of our provision.

We don’t want young people to feel like another name on a register.

They are known. They are valued. They are supported.

Could We Help?

If you’re a school, professional or parent looking to discuss alternative provision for a young person, we’d be happy to talk.
