For schools

A trusted partner for schools

At North Challenge Learning, we work alongside schools and professionals to provide personalised alternative education for young people who need a different approach to learning.

We understand that every referral is different. Our aim is to work collaboratively with schools to understand the young person’s needs, agree clear outcomes and provide a placement that is purposeful, supportive and focused on progress.

Who We Support

We can support young people who may be experiencing:

  • Difficulties engaging with mainstream education
  • Persistent or disrupted attendance
  • Anxiety around school or learning
  • Loss of confidence
  • Gaps in learning
  • Social or communication difficulties
  • Behavioural barriers to learning
  • Difficulties maintaining a positive relationship with education
  • A need for a more personalised learning environment
  • A need for additional support while a longer-term pathway is identified

We consider each referral individually and work with schools to establish whether our provision is appropriate for the young person.

Our Provision

Depending on the individual placement, we can offer:

1:1 Education

Highly personalised teaching designed around the young person’s needs, starting point and goals.

Academic Support

English, maths, literacy, numeracy and targeted support to address gaps in learning.

Functional Skills

Support towards Functional Skills qualifications where appropriate, including targeted preparation and intervention.

Re-engagement

Helping young people rebuild confidence, establish positive routines and reconnect with education.

Personal Development

Developing communication, confidence, independence, problem solving and other skills needed for future progression.

Practical & Enrichment Activities

Purposeful activities designed to increase engagement and develop wider skills.

A Personalised Placement

Before a placement begins, we aim to understand:

Who is the young person?

What are their strengths and interests?

What barriers are affecting their education?

What have they already tried?

What does successful progress look like?

What is the intended next step?

This information helps us develop provision that is meaningful rather than simply filling a timetable.

Referral & Placement Process

1. Initial Conversation

Contact us to discuss the young person’s circumstances and whether our provision may be suitable.

2. Information Gathering

We gather relevant information about the young person’s education, needs, strengths, risks and intended outcomes.

3. Placement Planning

We work with the school and relevant professionals to agree the programme, timetable, objectives and review arrangements.

4. Getting Started

We introduce the young person to the provision and begin building the relationship that will underpin their placement.

5. Monitoring & Communication

We monitor attendance, engagement and progress and maintain communication with the relevant school or professional.

6. Review & Next Steps

We review progress against agreed outcomes and work with the school and young person to identify appropriate next steps.

Communication With Schools

We understand how important communication is when a young person is accessing alternative provision.

We aim to provide clear and timely information regarding:

  • Attendance
  • Engagement
  • Progress
  • Achievements
  • Concerns
  • Safeguarding
  • Agreed targets
  • Next steps

The frequency and format of communication can be agreed with the commissioning school according to the needs of the placement.

Outcomes & Progress

We establish a clear starting point and agree meaningful outcomes for each placement.

Progress may include:

Improved attendance

Increased engagement

Improved confidence

Academic progress

Development of communication skills

Greater independence

Improved readiness to learn

Progression towards qualifications

Reintegration into education

Progression to college, training or employment

We recognise that meaningful progress can take different forms, and we monitor both academic and personal development.

Safeguarding

The safety and wellbeing of young people is central to our provision.

We maintain appropriate safeguarding policies and procedures and work with schools and relevant professionals to ensure concerns are identified, recorded and responded to appropriately.

Further information about our safeguarding arrangements and policies can be provided to schools as part of the referral and commissioning process.

Working in Partnership

We don’t see alternative provision as separate from a young person’s education.

We see ourselves as part of the wider team around the young person.

We aim to work collaboratively with:

Schools | SENCOs | Designated Safeguarding Leads | Parents & Carers | Local Authorities | Other Professionals

Our shared goal is to help the young person make progress and move towards their next appropriate pathway.

New Provider. Clear Commitment.

North Challenge Learning is a new independent provider, and we are committed to building our evidence base from the beginning.

We will establish clear starting points, agree measurable outcomes and record progress throughout each placement.

We believe that being a small new provider gives us the opportunity to build strong relationships with schools and provide a genuinely personalised service.
